Time to Sign with Children

Many children become frustrated when they cannot communicate their needs or wants. Even infants can understand what you are saying and have needs they would like to communicate back to you. You can help if you teach them sign language. In addition, sign language accelerates the acquisition of speech by stimulating areas of the brain that are associated with speech and language. Sign language reduces frustration by providing a way to expressively communicate in situations where verbal communication may not be successful.

Techniques for teaching sign language and how children play and learn are discussed. Various age-appropriate signs and handshapes including, the alphabet and numbers, commons signs, and advanced signs are described, illustrated, demonstrated, and detailed.
